war between art and commerce ended?
from Childhood's End, excellent Arthur Clarke novel---
because of influence from alien Overlords,
Everything was so cheap, that the necessities of life were free, provided as a public service to the community... the whole pattern of industry and commerce had changed completely... robot factories had poured forth consumer goods in such unending streams that all ordinary necessities were virtually free. Men worked for the sake of luxuries they desired: or they did not work at all.
Next to sport, entertainment was the greatest single industry.
For more than 100 years, there had been people who believed that Hollywood was the center of the world. They could now make a better case for this claim than ever before, but it was safe to say that most of 2050's productions would have seemed inconprehensibly highbrow to 1950.
There had been some progress: the box office was no longer lord of all it surveyed.

Haven't read that in forever!
I think its time I dig back into my boxes of books for my copy of this story.
I can't see the box office dropping off the face of the Earth for a long time (barring incomprehensible circumstances happening in the world), however I do feel its dominance in our culture will diminish to the point of mere novelty. We happen to be on the (right?) path though.
