This thread is intended to share ideas for actual practical tasks we as Wingmen can perform, ranging from sneaky things for shy people to ballsy things for outgoing people. A few to start us off:

  • Write a letter or email to your local newspaper about AAE. Who knows? They might be interested in running it in a human interest section.
  • Submit the story to any independent newspapers or magazines in your town. Especially the artsy ones.
  • Take advantage of public bulletin board space by posting flyers.
  • Bring AAE invites to any conventions you might be going to. Don't be shy- hand them out.
  • Live in a college town? Post flyers like crazy on campus, particularly around any art or a/v buildings.
  • Hand invites out randomly on the street.
  • Copy MSto's awesome idea and sneak invites into your favorite scifi/fantasy books at your public library.
  • Talk to local business people to see if their companies might want to donate to the project. Some corporations are into this sort of thing (example - JetBlue hooked us up for flights).
  • Blog it.
  • Twitter it.
  • Link it everywhere.

Let's keep the list going. Let us know how things work out. We can do this, we just need to... well, DO it.
What ideas do you guys have?

What can we actually do? Empty +Further Brainstorm From Le JSto

- I'll get you guys a version of the WINGMEN/No Wimps flyer sans "Comic-Con"/with the URL on it so that you can use it multi-purpose.
- Local press/news may want to interview you guys for the local angle on how you are involved in an international project and something anchored in Hollywood and engineered to influence cinema and media, so keep that in mind and don't be shy about representing. I had Channel 4 London inquire about that, but then they got fickle about the story and didn't do it (yet). ;-)
- Fansites should be our awesome friends (if they aren't already). They often cover other scifi/fantasy happenings and should have the opportunity to explore what we are doing as it's incredibly worthwhile to any movie fan. Anyone know anyone at MuggleNet? Loads of traffic and tons of like minded fans = success.
- Come up with a list of outlets and divide and conquer. Or post where you have submitted here on the board / where you need support. This gives others ideas and makes it easier if you need help. And let me know if something calls for a follow-up from me.
- As a rule I reach out to at least one outlet each weekday, even when I'm not doing publicity that day (on those days I obviously do much more). It adds up. Just imagine if dozens of people did that! That's much easier than one person sitting down to contact 100 people/outlets. Usually the "1" is sparked by something I read - maybe a reporter covering a like-minded subject or a new outlet I discover, or maybe a favorite blogger - I get ideas on the fly while surfing. Once you have a useful, quick e-mail written up it's easy to tailor it to each person you drop a line to. And let me tell you it feels really good when you see them cover the story and you know you had a part of it!

I'm going to try out this Wingman-made Twitter sig now! Woot!

Ok, I listen to a podcast about the show Lost, and occasionally the girlfriend of one of the podcasters does a segment from her own podcast called Metrobuzz. I think that AE and Jess would be a good fit for a possible podcast interview with them. They talk to a lot of independent bands and artists, so that's our people.

I just sent them an email with links to JSto blog, the wiki site, and the AE official site. I will let you all know if I hear back from them.

Thanks!

Example of a great place you might submit:
BBC's The Culture Show

They cover all kinds of stuff and did a large feature on Banksy, which is how I found them:

In addition to the separate forum post with movie mags to contact, I've also emailed Slice of Sci-fi (who gave a plug), scifi.com, Trekmovie.com, syfyportal.com, CNN, Entertainment weekly, Houston Press, Variety, Premiere, Vanity Faire, and some I've forgotten. but just cuz _I_ messaged them, doesn't mean no one else can/should. repetition re-enforces an idea. also wrote several articles at thesop.org (a new one just this week) and Newsblaze.com. will be sending myspace bulletin today. posted 2 blogs at redroom.com...
also, i distributed cards i made at a sci-fi con last year.
