Hollywood: Vandalizing & Scandalizing Empty Hollywood: Vandalizing & Scandalizing

We all know Hollywood is notorious for massively epic fails in movie adaptations and remakes. That reputation is not imagined, nor undeserved. They DO tend to ruin story because they have no respect, understanding or appreciation for the material. Story and artistry clearly does not matter to them.
Sometimes, the problem is that material has lost something in translation, or perhaps hired talent is incapable of properly adapting a story to the media of film.
George Lucas didn’t rape our childhood with the Star Wars prequels… it was Hollywood. George using the Hollywood mentality. He’s one of them, a pawn.
Watchmen director Zack Snyder is one of us. He also knows this axiom about Hollywood:
"At first I didn't want to make the movie," he says. "I was like everyone else. I didn't want to see Hollywood (mess) it up with some watered-down story where the good guys win, the bad guys lose and no one really gets hurt. Then I figured it ought to be someone who knows and loves the material. And if I didn't do it, someone else would."
Zack mentioned that when he saw the script The Studio had in mind for Watchmen (which is said to have taken so many liberties with the material, it wasn’t really Watchmen anymore), he realized he needed to accept & assume responsibility for directing this film. It was his duty, to ensure that Hollywood did NOT frak it up. And I totally respect him for that.
When I see the way Hollywood so regularly and routinely ruins things I love, I weep and throw up a little on the inside. I am not merely disappointed and sad… nor simply annoyed and frustrated.
Righteous indignation? Damn & Skippy!
And word has gone out that Hollywood is looking to convert/ vandalize increasingly more stories into movies.
Consider just a few representative examples of Hollwood’s tragic record of failure with adaptations:
Hitchhiker’s Guide, Superman Returns, Batman & Robin, Catwoman, Ghostrider, Transformers, Spiderman, X-Men, Iron Man, Dukes of Hazard, Land of the Lost, Scooby Doo.
They deviate from the source material to such a degree, that they might as well be called something else, and given a notation of “based on--”.
Is there no end to their sacrilege? Hollywood is so devoid of originality and creative integrity, they are also seeking to remake other movies! Whether the movie is fine as is and needs no remake is apparently irrelevant. Except that it actually is not irrelevant.
Are they gonna mess up G.I. Joe, too? Yet another debasement/ defacement of my childhood? What’s next? Remaking Star Wars eps 4-6? The style of an era in which a film (or TV show) is made is an aspect of its character, its charm, its essence. This is not a flaw. Trying to “modernize” an older movie just for the sake of “making it relevant to a new audience” is not necessarily necessary, nor automatically an improvement.
I’m a huge Star Trek fan… and yet the new Abrams project gives me serious doubts (and wiggins), has me worried. No-- agitated. I can already tell—as with Voyager and Enterprise—that this is not Star Trek. It might indeed be a great movie. But it will not be Trek. He so much as admits he’s ruining it. How? Because, as Wil Wheaton says, the movie trailers are designed in a way that is accessible & understandable for today’s adolescents. And what exactly does that mean? What does that say about the movie? What does that say about our youth? What does that say about the future of film making and storytelling? I cringe.
One of my favorite stories (EVAR) is Asimov’s Foundation series. I would love to see that made into a movie. But then I think of Hollywood fucking it up, and very much hope it doesn’t become a movie. At least, not one made by Hollywood. Unless we can get some kind of Zack Snyder or Christopher Nolan in there.

"We are the Wingmen. Among us there can be no wimps."
