I am on the User group mailing list for O'Reilly (the publishers of tech. books), and an interesting request to the UG folks on their mailing list came for inputs to a book in the works. I am going to submit something about Wingmen, this forum, the Artemis movement, etc. I will gladly take suggestions for inputs from my fellow wingmen. I am planning on getting something out in the next day or two as work and kids allow.

Here is the request I am talking about. While all that is mentioned ...

We all know Hollywood is notorious for massively epic fails in movie adaptations and remakes. That reputation is not imagined, nor undeserved. They DO tend to ruin story because they have no respect, understanding or appreciation for the material. Story and artistry clearly does not matter to them.

Sometimes, the problem is that material has lost something in translation, or perhaps hired talent is incapable of properly adapting a story to the media of film.

If I’ve learned anything at all as a journalist it’s that the pressing issues of the day that cry out for headlines often turn out to be much less important than back-of-the-book stories. But to redress this problem we need a culture more respectful of history than our own.

(excerpt from my book Media Is The Masses)

Story of My Life...

Our social media tend to define our culture.

But, ideally, our media should also defy our culture.

Media are very effective tools for instilling impressions and ideologies.

Demonstrative and illustrative, film has the capacity and power to re-enforce the status quo, or to re-inform and reform.

Subliminally and overtly, film relays and relates messages... about how we see ourselves and our reality. Humans are innate social ...

Most of the stories I’ve read/watched --science fiction or not-- are published/produced by sources/names acknowledged in a particular sphere of audience.

Most of the stories are… not good.

Rev 14:1 And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him a hundred forty [and] four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.

Rev 14:2 And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:

Rev 14:3 And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred ...

This thread is intended to share ideas for actual practical tasks we as Wingmen can perform, ranging from sneaky things for shy people to ballsy things for outgoing people. A few to start us off:

Write a letter or email to your local newspaper about AAE. Who knows? They might be interested in running it in a human interest section.

Submit the story to any independent newspapers or magazines in your town. Especially the artsy ones.

Take advantage of public bulletin board space by ...

Alan Moore hates Hollywood

Comics iconoclast Alan Moore disparages that Hollywood tends to dilute and distort stories in atempts to adapt into films. The original source material is lost in translation, becoming vandalized and diminished. He considers V for Vendetta and Watchmen (stories he wrote) such victims.

"I find film in its modern form to be quite bullying. It spoon-feeds us, which has the effect of watering down our collective cultural imagination. It is as if we are freshly hatched birds looking up with ...

Signs and portents abound

Joseph Campbell said: 'The symbolic field is based on the experiences of people in a particular community, at that particular time and place. Myths are so innately bound to the culture, time and place that unless the symbols, the metaphors, are kept alive by constant recreation through the arts, the life just slips away from them.'

This concept is at the Vanguard of all philosophy and science fiction... it is what both of these 'genres' have in common, the destination they both pursue. ...

If while reading the title of this thread you got all excited thinking there was an ongoing discussion about the debut album of Faith No More....I apologize (but you have good taste in music, and we'll chat later). Rather, this is a place for Wingmen to share a little bit about themselves with the community. It doesn't have to be extensive or particularly detailed. We don't need your VISA number. (but if you feel compelled, contact us at wingmencentral@gmail.com). Hopefully, we'll find ...
